Airfares have hit record highs, and many of us who travel are often challenged to seek out lower prices. Are low-budget airlines a good alternative, or are they just masquerading as an airline?

Airfares have hit record highs, and many of us who travel are often challenged to seek out lower prices. Are low-budget airlines a good alternative, or are they just masquerading as an airline?

As a small business owner, I need to be able to book a flight, often with short notice. I recently booked a round-trip flight from Miami to New York, and here’s my opinion on my recent experience with Spirit Airlines.

The Seats are Incredibly Uncomfortable

I’m 5’10” and weigh 180 lbs; by typical standards, I’m considered the average height and weight for an American male. Simply, I suffered and couldn’t imagine the discomfort of others and what they may be experiencing who were taller and weighed more than me. Additionally, the seats were rock-hard and very narrow.

There are no complimentary snacks/drinks, & even water you’ll have to pay for

My expectations were low going in once I booked Spirit Airlines, but I never expected that I’d have to pay for water. Once onboard, you’ll be charged $4, so buy one once in the airport and any snacks you’ll want to enjoy before boarding your flight.

Ensure your luggage meets the required measurements, or you could be stuck with a $99 charge.

While you’re allowed a carry-on and a personal item, be sure that it meets the measurements allowed or pay a hefty carry-on fee at the gate- a predicament that I witnessed other passengers go through.

If you have more oversized luggage or exceed the number of items, Spirit reservation centers are located in the airport, which is slightly cheaper than paying at the gate.

Charge your devices in advance

Power outlets are located on something other than Spirit Airlines, so charge your phone and other devices before boarding, and don’t expect WIFI, even if you have paid for it ($2.99 for browsing to $5.99 for streaming).

To that end, would I book Spirit again for a short weekend trip that requires little to no luggage? Yes, but that is because the price was considerably lower than the charges asked by the other airlines.
